Description
Graphite consists of pure carbon arranged in a hexagonal crystal system. One differentiates between natural and synthetic graphite depending on the extraction or production method. Graphite exhibits a unique combination of material properties due to the special crystalline composition of the layer structure. Natural – Synthetic – Exfoliated – GraphiteNordic&Baltic

Properties:
- Heat-resistant up to > 3000 °C in an O2-free atmosphere
- Highly resistant to temperature fluctuations
- Chemically inert with acids and oxidants
- Outstanding thermal and electrical conductivity Natural – Synthetic – Exfoliated – GraphiteNordic&Baltic
- Good lubricating properties
Natural graphite – is found in deposits around the world and mainly extracted by surface mining. China is the main mining region, with additional deposits in Africa, South America and Europe. Subsequent further processing produces a variety of grades with different levels of purity and particle sizes. Natural graphite is classified as macrocrystalline and microcrystalline (“amorphous”) depending on the characteristics of the crystal structure. Natural – Synthetic – Exfoliated – GraphiteNordic&Baltic
Fields of application:
- Refractory and foundry industry
- Frictions
- Lubricants
- Graphite sheets and parts
- Plastic compounds
- Various applications in the automotive industry
Synthetic graphite – is produced from petroleum coke or other amorphous carbon compounds through extended thermal treatment at approximately 3000 °C in the absence of oxygen. Through sifting and grinding processes, synthetic graphite with a particle size of 2 µm to 20 mm and a carbon content of 98% or higher can be obtained.
Fields of application:
- Moulded graphite parts for glass and foundry industry Natural – Synthetic – Exfoliated – GraphiteNordic&Baltic
- Powdered synthetic graphite
Exfoliated graphite – Special processing methods are used to produce what is known as exfoliated graphite or expandable graphite from natural mineral graphite. It has the unique property of abruptly expanding by many times its volume when it is exposed to heat.
Benefits of expandable graphite as halogen free flame retardant:
- Forms an intumescence layer
- Stops or slows the spread of fire
- Counteracts the spread of toxic gases
- Highly efficient with low input quantity Natural – Synthetic – Exfoliated – GraphiteNordic&Baltic
- Easy to apply as flakes
